Kuti Project: The Ranch

Kuti Community Wildlife Park started life as a cattle ranch belonging to the government. In the late 1990s members of the Wildlife Producers and Hunters Association of Malawi (WPHAM) acquired the ranch and began work on bringing in wildlife and creating places for the visiting public to stay.

Today, Kuti is a 3,000 hectare ranch dedicated to conservation and environmental education. The area is a haven of natural woodland, grassland and wetland in the middle of bare farmland and is home to many species of animals, much like the Malawian flat plains just a few generations ago. In this setting, WPHAM emphasises rehabilitation of wildlife populations and education of the community about the responsible use of natural resources. Their aim is to sell surplus animals in the future in order to achieve self-sustainability and to support development in the local communities. ››
